EV CHARGING CONNECTORS

J-1772

J-1772 CONNECTORS

Level 1 and Level 2 chargers use J-1772 connectors, which are standard and work on all EVs. The U.S. adoption of the J1772 Standard ensures all Level 2 charging station connectors will be compatible with all EV inlets found in U.S. vehicles.

The connector is designed to withstand all weather conditions and boasts numerous built-in safety measures.  The plug is never “live” when handled; no energy is released until a safe connection is detected and when disconnected, the plug is immediately de-energized.  An EV cannot move while the J1772 connector is plugged in, ensuring a driver cannot drive away with the cord connected.

CCS and CHAdeMO CONNECTORS

Level 3 chargers often include both CCS and CHAdeMO charging connectors.

  • CCS Connector: US Standard for most EVs. Combines the J1772 standard with DC Charging in one port. Bidirectional capable.
  • CHAdeMO Connector: This connector is compatible with many Japanese manufactured Plug-Ins (Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc). Bidirectional capable.

Tesla does not conform to either standard, but Tesla drivers have adapters available that allow them to charge at non-Tesla stations.

Education

We can work through your project needs to help you specify the right EV charging system for your application.  We partner with manufacturers to provide startup training and support.

Steiner has answers for all of your Electric Vehicle charging questions, such as: Does your application require a simple charger? Or does it need a networked charger, which would allow:

  • Power Sharing | Maximize EV charging spaces while minimizing changes in infastructure
  • Billing | Ability to charge and recover cost
  • Access control | Employees only, residents, etc
  • Remote access and maintenance | Ensure operation of multiple chargers across locations
  • Analytics
  • Visibility to drivers via mobile app

Steiner stocks both networked and non-networked chargers, and can help navigate location-specific requirements.
