FAQs
Q: What are the advantages of Division 2 designs over Division 1 designs?
A: Division 1 designs rely on flamepaths between cover and back box flanges, requiring grease and regular maintenance. Appleton Division 2 designs use component-level protection (e.g., sealed contact blocks), allowing for gaskets that block moisture and dust—eliminating the need for grease and improving durability.
Q: How does the Contender 4/4X Series protect against harsh environments?
A: Each device includes a cover gasket, operator head gasket, and O-rings under the cover screws. Stainless steel screws resist corrosion, and epoxy powder coating shields against chemicals, heat, and mechanical wear. Aluminum back boxes are available for 4X protection.
Q: What savings can be realized by upgrading to the Contender 4/4X Series?
A: Better ingress and corrosion protection reduces maintenance, prevents cover seizure, and extends product life. Avoids costly full replacements and the need for non-metallic alternatives. Less downtime allows personnel to focus on higher-priority tasks.
Q: Are Contender 4/4X covers approved for Crouse-Hinds EDS back boxes?
A: Yes, they are UL Classified for use with Crouse-Hinds EDS Series back boxes.
Q: How does the Contender 4/4X Series perform in demanding environments?
A: Tested to meet or exceed Type 4, 4X, 12, IP66, IP6X standards—including high-pressure water spray, salt spray, dust chamber exposure, and oil immersion—to ensure maximum protection and reliability.
Q: Can the Contender 4/4X be used in a Class I, Division 1 area?
A: No. For Class I, Division 1 areas, use the Appleton EFDB Series or Appleton Contender Series rated specifically for Division 1 environments.
